Zebra® separators segregate the bike lane on Ocean Drive, the iconic street in Miami Beach.

PROJECT NAME: Segregation of a two-way bike lane on Ocean Drive, Miami Beach.
CITY: Miami Beach, Florida.
LOCATION: Ocean Drive, Miami Beach.
DATE OF INSTALLATION: March, 2022

Miami Beach has seen an increase in its bike and public transport users, as well as an increase in the number of citizens going about on foot. Today approximately 45% of residents and tourists in this city choose bikes or public transport or just walk for their trips around the city.

Local authorities felt it was the right time to invest in infrastructure and make active transport play a leading role in the city. The result of these efforts was the City of Miami Beach Transportation Master Plan that includes the Ocean Drive project.

Project requirements and objectives.

Ocean Drive is one of the most popular areas and one of the biggest tourist attractions of Miami Beach, known mainly for its art deco style hotels, restaurants and bars. It is a street that hosts many events throughout the year, such as parades, open streets, shows, filming and races.

Furthermore, during COVID 19, local authorities decided to pedestrianise the street, and it was then that they realised the need to develop a safe, comprehensive and accessible cycling network to accommodate different types of users and encourage human powered transportation once the city returned to normal.

The essential requirement for all the new cycling infrastructure to be developed in that location was that it had to be reversible to accommodate the distinctive features of Ocean Drive. Local authorities already anticipated that the street should regularly be repurposed to be able to host the various events taking place at this location in a safe and accessible way.

Proposed solution.

The solution chosen by the city of Miami Beach was the construction of a segregated two-way bike lane with the Zebra® 13 separators from the ZICLA Zebra® family. To ensure the maximum safety of this bike lane, the city adopted the oblique configuration as seen in the image.

The project was initially installed using chemical anchors, which provide the strongest and most reliable support for the separators. However, realising the need for frequent dismantling, they concluded that the project would no longer be semi-permanent, but rather temporary in its nature.

As a result, ZICLA recommends the use of metal jacket anchors. These anchors are firmly attached to the ground using epoxy resin, providing a stable base on which separators can be easily screwed. This approach allows for convenient installation or removal when needed, without the need to re-drill the street or purchase new anchors every month.

At ZICLA we accompany the operators of the city of Miami Beach in person in the complete installation process. We are committed to the success of all projects we are involved in. We believe that support in the installation process is crucial in order to be able to resolve any technical queries that arise at the time, and this is therefore another milestone in our sales process.

Other projects in Miami Beach where you can also find separators from the Zebra® family.

Other iconic streets such as Meridian Avenue and Venetian Causeway also feature bike lanes protected by the Zebra® family bike lane separators.

On Meridian Avenue, they opted for the Zebra® 13 to protect one-way bike lanes, with an oblique configuration in a narrow buffer.

In turn, for the Venetian Causeway bike lane, they chose the parallel Zebra® 9 model, installed on the narrow dividing line between the bike lane and the adjacent traffic lane.

The city of Miami Beach has taken advantage of the different dimensions of our Zebra® family separators as well as the different configurations possible when installing them to accommodate the specific characteristics and needs of each street. We are honoured that the city has relied on ZICLA’s solutions repeatedly to create a safe, comfortable and well-connected cycling infrastructure.
