PROJECT NAME: | Segregated Cycle Lane with the Zipper® system, in Daytona, FL, USA. |
CITY: | Daytona Beach, Florida, USA. |
LOCATION: | Oakridge Boulevard |
DATE OF INSTALLATION: | 2022 |
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) undertook a project to improve safety on Oakridge Boulevard in Daytona Beach. The street was redesigned to reduce the number of motorized traffic lanes from three to two and to create a 6.98ft-wide segregated cycle lane. The project also included measures to enhance the safety and comfort of pedestrians and cyclists, such as refurbishing existing sidewalks and improving safety for cyclists and pedestrians at intersections.
To carry out this project, FDOT contacted the technical sales team at ZICLA. The team responded to the project’s requirements with a technical proposal that included a segregated bike lane with the Zipper® system‘s traffic lane dividers on a B2AB configuration.
Project Needs and Objectives
FDOT needed to find a solution to transform a motorized traffic lane into a segregated bike lane to protect cyclists and prevent vehicles from invading the cycle lane, thereby making Oakridge Boulevard a complete street that safely accommodates different modes of transportation. The project requirements included:
- The segregation of traffic using separator elements assembled in a configuration that protects bike lane users.
- The easy installation and removal of the separator elements.
- The ability of the modules to adequately withstand potential impacts from motor vehicles.
- The reconfiguration of intersections to narrow the road and reduce the distance between sidewalks on both sides, thereby increasing pedestrian and cyclist safety at crossings.
Proposed solution
FDOT chose to use the Zipper® system modules from ZICLA to segregate the bike lane on Oakridge Boulevard. The Zipper® system is a modular system for segregating traffic flows, allowing for different configurations and levels of segregation depending on the type of roadway and traffic intensity.
The B2AB configuration of the Zipper® system from ZICLA was chosen for this project. This configuration consists of two A modules of the Zipper® system in the center and one B module at each end.
The versatility of this modular product was one of the main reasons the Florida Department of Transportation chose it to meet the project’s needs. This project was the first to include the Zipper® system in Florida, and it led to the product’s current inclusion on the FDOT’s Approved Products List.
